Every tire family is built for a different surface. Find the line that describes most of your rides, then choose the level that fits your budget.
Fast road riding and racing
Aeolus
RSL, Pro, Elite and Comp levels. Pro adds a 120 TPI tubeless-ready casing; Elite is a simpler 60 TPI clincher.
Rough pavement and long road days
Kwaremont
32 to 38 mm widths for more air and comfort. RSL uses a 320 TPI cotton casing, Pro a tougher 120 TPI one.
Commuting and flat-prone roads
Hard-Case
Extra layers under the tread and, on some models, in the sidewall. Hard-Case Max Pro is tubeless ready; AW1 Hard-Case is a long-running pick.
Fast gravel and mixed roads
Girona
Low, smooth center tread for pavement, hardpack and graded dirt. 700 x 35 to 50 mm on the Pro.
Loose, rocky gravel
Betasso
Larger knobs and more protection for chunky descents and forest roads. 42 to 55 mm, so check frame clearance.
Cross-country MTB

- Bead / setup
- Wire bead, run with a tube

- Casing
- 60 TPI
- Bead / setup
- Clincher, used with an inner tube

- 700c road widths, check the listing for current options
Keeps the Aeolus focus on efficient rolling without the cost of a premium tubeless casing. The shoulders keep some texture, so it is not a slick race-only tire.

Best for: Streets, bike paths and easy dirt; youth and older mountain bikes
- Casing
- 30 TPI
- Bead / setup
- Wire bead clincher, run with a tube
- Sizes
- 20, 24, 26, 27.5 and 29 x 2.0 in
Small center knobs keep it reasonably quick on pavement, and larger shoulder knobs give support in loose corners. One of the easiest replacement tires to find in an odd size.
Check sizes and priceBontrager H2 Comp Hybrid Tire
Best for: Commuting, fitness rides, bike paths and light gravel
- Casing
- 30 TPI
- Bead / setup
- Clincher, run with a tube
- Sizes
- 26, 27.5 and 700c (700 x 32 to 45 mm)
The tread gets more traction-focused as the width goes up, so a 700 x 45 grips loose paths better than a 700 x 32. A common stock tire on hybrid bikes.
Check sizes and priceWhat Sets Bontrager Tires Apart
There's no single best bike tire. Bontrager tunes tread, casing and protection for each kind of riding, so you can trade weight for toughness, or the other way around.
A Tread for Each Surface
Low, tight tread rolls fast on pavement and hardpack. Taller, open knobs dig into loose dirt and give more edges for braking. Bontrager runs that range from slick-center Aeolus to aggressive Galbraith.
Casing Matched to the Job
A 320 TPI cotton road casing feels supple. A 60 TPI enduro casing shrugs off rocks. Higher TPI isn't automatically better, it just solves a different problem. Dual and triple compounds put grippier rubber where you corner.
Protection Where You Need It
Hard-Case layers for glass-strewn commutes, bead-to-bead belts on performance tires, apex inserts against pinch cuts on MTB rubber, and tubeless-ready (TLR) casings across the range.

How to Choose the Right Bontrager Tire
Four checks before you order, in the order that saves the most returns.
1. Read the size on your old tire
- The sidewall shows something like 700 x 32 or 29 x 2.4. The first number is the wheel, the second is the width.
- 700c road and gravel wheels and 29-inch MTB wheels share the same 622 mm bead seat. 27.5 is 584 mm and 26 is 559 mm.
- Going wider? Check the clearance limits for your frame and fork first. A matching bead diameter doesn't mean a wider tire will fit.
2. Pick the tread for your surface
- Mostly pavement: Aeolus, Kwaremont, or H1/H2 on a hybrid.
- Pavement plus dirt roads: Girona, or Betasso if the gravel is loose and rocky.
- Singletrack: choose by terrain first (Vallnord through Galbraith), then casing level.
3. Decide on tube or tubeless
- TLR tires go tubeless with a tubeless-ready rim, rim tape, valve and sealant.
- Tubeless lets you run lower pressure with no pinch flats, but sealant needs topping up every few months.
- Every TLR tire also works with a tube, so carry one for punctures sealant can't close.
4. Set the pressure
- The number on the sidewall is a maximum, not a target.
- Wider tires and tubeless setups run lower pressure than narrow road tires with tubes.
- Adjust for your weight, any cargo, and the surface. Too hard costs grip and comfort; too soft risks rim strikes.
About Bontrager
Bontrager started with Keith Bontrager, a Santa Cruz, California frame builder who made his name in the early days of mountain biking. He built steel frames, rims and forks with a focus on parts that hold up, and his line "Strong. Light. Cheap. Pick two." is still quoted by bike mechanics.
Bontrager joined Trek in the mid-1990s. Since then the name has covered tires, wheels, components, helmets and apparel, and most Trek bikes leave the factory on Bontrager rubber. That's why so many riders look for the same model when it's time to replace a worn tire.
One Range, Many Kinds of Riding
The tire lineup runs from affordable wire-bead replacements like the Connection Comp and H2 Comp up to 320 TPI cotton road tires and reinforced tubeless trail casings. The right one is whichever matches your bike's size and the surface it actually sees.
Not Just for Trek Bikes
A 700c Bontrager tire fits any 700c rim, and a 29-inch one fits any 29er, as long as the width suits your rim and you have frame and fork clearance. The brand name on the down tube doesn't matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bontrager is a Trek brand. Keith Bontrager founded Bontrager Cycles in California, and Trek acquired the company in the 1990s. Today, Bontrager products are developed and sold as part of Trek's cycling equipment range, including tires, wheels, components, helmets, and apparel.
No. Bontrager tires can be used on bikes from other manufacturers as long as the wheel diameter, rim compatibility, tire width, and frame or fork clearance are correct. A 700c Bontrager road tire, for example, does not require a Trek bicycle simply because it carries the Bontrager name.
The range includes road, gravel, mountain bike, hybrid, city, and recreational tires. Performance families include Aeolus and Kwaremont for road riding, Girona and Betasso for gravel, and several MTB tread families including Vallnord, Sainte-Anne, Montrose, Gunnison, Brevard, and Galbraith. H-series and Connection models cover commuting, mixed-surface riding, and general replacement use.
TLR means Tubeless Ready. A TLR tire can be installed without an inner tube when paired with a compatible tubeless-ready rim, valve, sealing system, and tire sealant. Tubeless setups can run lower pressures and eliminate traditional pinch flats caused by trapping an inner tube between the rim and an obstacle.
Yes. Tubeless-ready Bontrager tires can generally be used with a correctly sized inner tube when the wheel and tire combination permits it. This is useful during initial installation or as an emergency repair after a puncture that sealant cannot close.
Aeolus is centered on fast modern road riding and is available in relatively conventional performance-road widths. Kwaremont uses larger 32 to 38 mm sizes and higher-volume constructions intended to remain fast while improving comfort and control on rough pavement. Kwaremont RSL also uses an especially supple 320 TPI cotton casing.
Girona favors speed on pavement, hardpack, and maintained gravel roads. Its center section uses relatively little tread to reduce unnecessary rolling resistance. Betasso uses larger tread blocks and more robust constructions for loose gravel, rocks, rough forest roads, and routes that begin to overlap with mountain-bike terrain.
Vallnord is the fastest option for dry, hardpacked XC terrain. Sainte-Anne adds more tread support for changing conditions, roots, rocks, and wetter surfaces. Riders choosing between them should prioritize actual trail conditions rather than assuming that the lightest or fastest tire is automatically the better choice.
Montrose is a fast trail tread intended primarily for firm and hardpacked surfaces. The Montrose Comp XR uses a simple 30 TPI wire-bead construction with apex puncture protection, making it a practical replacement tire for recreational and trail bikes. It is less suitable than more aggressive Bontrager models for deep mud or very loose terrain.
These models progressively move toward more aggressive trail and enduro use. Gunnison is a versatile trail tire for mixed conditions. Brevard adds more substantial tread and reinforced casing options for loose, technical terrain. Galbraith sits toward the aggressive end of the lineup, where braking traction, cornering grip, and impact resistance matter more than minimizing rolling resistance.
TPI means threads per inch and describes the density of threads used in the tire casing. Higher-TPI casings can be lighter and more flexible, which can improve road feel and reduce casing deformation. TPI is not a simple quality ranking, however. A reinforced 60 TPI mountain-bike tire may be intentionally stronger and more appropriate for enduro riding than a much finer race casing.
Hard-Case is Bontrager's puncture-protection concept for tires intended to withstand more demanding everyday use. Depending on the specific model, protection can include reinforcement below the tread, anti-cut casing material, sidewall protection, or additional breaker layers. These tires generally prioritize puncture resistance and durability over the lowest possible weight.
The H2 Comp is a hybrid tire for paved roads, bike paths, commuting, fitness riding, and occasional light unpaved use. It is offered in several wheel diameters and multiple 700c widths, making it useful both for newer hybrid bikes and as a replacement tire on older bicycles.
Match the wheel diameter first, then check tire width against the bicycle frame, fork, rim, and manufacturer clearance limits. A tire labeled 700 x 32 and one labeled 700 x 50 fit the same nominal wheel diameter but occupy very different amounts of space. Mountain-bike sizes such as 29 x 2.4 also require adequate frame and rim compatibility. Never assume that a wider tire will fit simply because the bead diameter matches.
Pressure depends on tire width, rider and cargo weight, rim dimensions, surface, casing construction, and whether the tire uses a tube or tubeless setup. Wider tires normally require less pressure than narrow road tires. The maximum pressure printed on the tire is a limit, not a target setting for every rider. Excess pressure can reduce comfort and grip, while pressure that is too low can cause instability, rim strikes, or casing damage.
